Turn Off the TV... Turn Up the Music

The Simple Change I Didn't Know I Needed

A couple of weeks ago, I made one little change that has completely shifted the feeling in my home.

I turned off the TV and turned on the tunes.

I have always been someone who likes background noise. For years, that background noise was usually a television show I had already seen a hundred times. I wasn't really watching it. It was just...there.

Then one morning I decided to start my day differently.

Instead of reaching for the remote, I asked Alexa to play music.

I may have mentioned before that I have Alexa devices all over my house, so music is literally one sentence away. We also have SiriusXM in our vehicles, which connects to all of the Alexa devices, so whatever mood I'm in, I can usually find the perfect station.

Lately I've been bouncing between 70s, 80s, power ballads, country, classic rock...whatever fits the day.

And honestly?

I don't think I'm going back.

We Don't Realize How Much Noise We Live In

Most of us don't intentionally choose what fills our minds.

The television is on.The phone is in our hand. The notifications never stop.We scroll. We watch one more episode. We check one more video.

Before we know it, an hour is gone.

Then another.

The average American spends several hours every day watching television and several more hours on their smartphone. That's not necessarily because we're lazy. It's because these devices are designed to keep our attention.

The problem isn't just the time they steal.

It's the energy they steal.

Television asks you to sit.

Your phone asks you to stay still.

Music asks you to move.

Music Changes Your Body Without You Even Thinking About It

One of the things I've noticed is that I naturally move more when music is playing.

I'll dance while I'm making dinner.

I'll clean one more room.

I'll stretch while waiting for my coffee.

I'll walk a little faster.

I don't have to convince myself.

It just happens.

That's because our brains naturally respond to rhythm. Music activates multiple areas of the brain at the same time. It can improve mood, increase motivation, reduce stress hormones, and even release dopamine—the chemical associated with pleasure and reward.

Think about that.

We're constantly searching for things that make us feel better.

Sometimes the answer is sitting in a playlist.

Music Lets You Feel Your Feelings

One of the reasons people turn to food is because they're trying to change how they feel.

Stress.

Loneliness.

Boredom.

Celebration.

Sadness.

Food becomes comfort.

But music has a way of meeting us exactly where we are.

Need to cry?

There's a song for that.

Need motivation?

There's a playlist for that.

Need peace?

Music can lower your heart rate, calm your breathing, and help your nervous system settle down.

Need energy?

Turn on your favorite dance songs and try sitting still.

I dare you.

Unlike emotional eating, music doesn't leave us feeling guilty afterward.

It simply helps us process what we're already feeling.

Your Favorite Songs Hold Memories

Have you ever heard the first few notes of a song and instantly remembered exactly where you were?

A first dance.

High school.

Summer vacation.

A road trip.

Someone you loved.

Music has an incredible connection to memory because it activates areas of the brain tied to emotion.

One song can instantly transport us back decades.

That's powerful.

What If We Replaced Just Thirty Minutes?

I'm not suggesting you never watch television.

I enjoy relaxing with a good show too.

But what if...

Instead of watching TV while cooking dinner...

...you played music?

Instead of scrolling social media for thirty minutes...

...you took a walk with your favorite playlist?

Instead of cleaning in silence...

...you had a dance party in your kitchen?

Those thirty minutes would probably look very different.

You'd move more.

Smile more.

Burn a few extra calories without thinking about it.

Lower your stress.

Improve your mood.

And maybe even reconnect with a part of yourself you've forgotten.

Here's Your Challenge This Week

I have a challenge for you.

For the next seven days, start every morning with music.

Before the television.

Before social media.

Before the news.

Pick music that matches the person you want to become that day.

Need confidence?

Play confidence.

Need peace?

Play peace.

Need motivation?

Play motivation.

Need joy?

Play joy.

Then pay attention.

Do you move more?

Do you smile more?

Do you have more energy?

Do you find yourself getting more done?

I think you'll be surprised.

One Last Thought

The Power of 13 has never been about finding the perfect diet.

It's about making small, common-sense choices that make your life healthier.

Sometimes those choices are vegetables.

Sometimes they're walking.

Sometimes they're getting more sleep.

And sometimes...

They're as simple as turning off the TV...

...and turning up the music.

Your body might thank you.

But I have a feeling your soul will too.
