Why Weight Loss Is Harder When You’ve Done It Before

If you’ve lost weight before—reached your goal or gotten close—and then gained it back, weight loss hits differently the next time.

It’s not just physical anymore. It’s mental. Emotional. Personal.

You don’t just start another “plan.”You start questioning yourself.

Why bother if I’m just going to gain it back again? What if I don’t actually know how to keep it off? What if this is just who I am?

And that loss of confidence? That’s often the hardest weight to carry.

Repeated Weight Loss Changes the Game

Weight loss is hard. Period. But when you’ve done it over and over, it can feel heavier for a few real reasons:

  • Confidence erosion: Each regain chips away at your belief that you can maintain.

  • Plateaus feel louder: When progress slows, doubt fills the silence.

  • Motivation fades faster: You’ve seen this movie before—and you didn’t like the ending.

  • Fear of failure creeps in: Sometimes it feels safer not to try than to try again and be disappointed.

None of this means you’re weak.It means you’re human.

My Truth: The First Time Didn’t Stick

When I lost weight the first time in 1991, I reached my goal—and within moments of leaving my WW meeting, I was already back in my old habits.

I drove straight to Albertsons, bought a quart of eggnog (it was December), and drank it in the parking lot.

And I didn’t stop there.

That moment taught me something critical:I hadn’t changed my habits.I had just put them on hold.

Why Diets “Work” but Don’t Last

Here’s a hard truth most programs don’t talk about:

You can lose weight without changing how you live—but you can’t keep it off that way.

Common reasons weight comes back:

  • Relying on rules instead of skills

  • Using deprivation instead of structure

  • Eating “on plan” but not learning how to eat

  • Waiting to “get back to normal” instead of redefining normal

Weight loss that isn’t paired with habit change is temporary by design.

The Plateau Trap

Plateaus are where a lot of people give up—not because they’re failing, but because they have time to think.

That pause creates space for:

  • Old doubts

  • Past failures

  • “What’s the point?” thinking

A plateau doesn’t mean it’s not working. It means your body is adjusting—and your mindset needs support.

What Actually Changed Everything for Me

I went back to WW more than 10 times before things finally clicked.

What changed wasn’t the program. It was my attitude and my goal.

I promised myself:

  • I would stop chasing fast results

  • I would learn how to eat without deprivation

  • I would build habits that fit the life I was actually living

  • I would learn from my mistakes—not live in them

That’s when weight loss became sustainable.

You Have to Lose Weight the Way You Plan to Live

If you want to keep weight off, your habits must be:

  • Doable

  • Repeatable

  • Flexible

  • Built for real life

That means:

  • Portion control (not perfection)

  • Less saturated fat and added sugar

  • More vegetables and fiber

  • Adequate sleep (non-negotiable)

  • Movement that fits your body and schedule

  • Awareness, not obsession

Yes—this is where the Power of 13 comes in.

Why We Built Always On Your Side Coaching This Way

When we started Always On Your Side Coaching, I knew one thing for sure:

Everyone needs structure—but no one needs another rigid rulebook.

That’s why we:

  • Use the Power of 13 as a foundation

  • Focus on tiny habits that actually stick

  • Help clients find their easiest way—not mine

  • Teach maintenance while losing weight, not after

Because confidence doesn’t come from the scale. It comes from knowing you can repeat what you’re doing.

Tips & Truths That Matter

  • Weight regain is common—and not a personal failure

  • Maintenance skills must be practiced early

  • Habits beat motivation every time

  • Consistency matters more than intensity

  • You don’t need to do this perfectly—you need to do it honestly
