Build a Life That Supports Your Health
Build a Life That Supports Your Health
Most health plans don’t fail because you don’t know what to do.
They fail because they ask you to live a life you’re not actually living.
You have work. Family. Appointments. Social events. Vacations. Stressful weeks. Tired days. And sometimes you simply don’t feel like doing all the things.
That’s real life.
And if your plan only works when everything goes perfectly, it isn’t much of a plan.
This is one of the reasons I created The Power of 13. After decades of maintaining my own weight loss and coaching others, I have learned that healthy living doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, complicated is often what gets us into trouble.
We keep looking for the next diet, the perfect workout, the newest food rule or the thing that is finally going to “fix” us.
Meanwhile, the basics still work.
The goal isn’t to do everything perfectly. The goal is to find the easiest way to health for you—and then build a life that supports those choices.
Here are 13 simple moves you can start today.
1. Move Your Body
Movement does not have to mean spending an hour at the gym.
Walk. Stretch. Take a yoga class. Lift weights. Dance in your kitchen. Do 10 minutes now and another 10 later.
Your body needs movement, but there isn't one perfect way to give it that movement.
Find something you can actually see yourself continuing to do.
2. Build and Protect Your Muscle
As we age, strength becomes about so much more than how we look.
Muscle supports our metabolism, balance, mobility, independence and ability to keep doing the things we love.
You don't have to become a bodybuilder.
Start where you are. Bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, machines or a few dumbbells all count.
Strong is protective.
3. Eat Enough Protein
Protein helps with fullness, muscle maintenance and recovery.
Instead of waiting until dinner and realizing you've barely eaten any protein all day, think about spreading it throughout your meals.
Ask yourself:
Where's my protein?
It's one simple question that can improve the balance of a meal without turning eating into a complicated math problem.
4. Don't Forget Fiber
Fiber doesn't get nearly enough attention.
Vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds can help support digestion, fullness, blood sugar management and heart health.
Rather than obsessing over what you need to remove from your diet, look at what you can add.
Could this meal use some produce? Some beans? A whole grain?
Sometimes better nutrition starts by adding something—not taking something away.
5. Drink Your Water
We can make hydration incredibly complicated. It doesn't need to be.
Keep water where you can see it. Carry a bottle. Drink some when you wake up. Have water with meals.
And pay attention to what is actually in your cup throughout the day.
Coffee drinks, alcohol, soda and other beverages can add up quickly without making us feel particularly satisfied.
6. Pay Attention to Portions
Healthy food still has portions.
Nuts are healthy. Avocado is healthy. Olive oil is healthy. Cheese can absolutely fit into a healthy lifestyle.
That doesn't mean portions don't matter.
You don't need to weigh and measure everything forever, but learning what an actual serving looks like gives you information.
And information gives you choices.
7. Make Food Easier
You don't need seven days of perfectly prepped containers lined up in your refrigerator.
You need options.
Keep a few proteins ready. Have vegetables and fruit available. Know two or three breakfasts you like. Have an easy lunch you can throw together. Keep a few emergency foods around for the days when life goes sideways.
Healthy eating gets much easier when the healthy choice is also the convenient choice.
8. Stop Trying to Be Perfect
One meal does not make you healthy.
One meal does not make you unhealthy.
One missed workout doesn't erase your progress, and neither does a vacation, birthday, restaurant meal or difficult week.
The bigger question is:
What do you do next?
You don't need to restart Monday.
You simply return to the habits that make you feel your best.
9. Stack New Habits Onto Things You Already Do
Want to stretch more? Stretch while your coffee brews.
Want to take your vitamins consistently? Put them next to something you use every morning.
Want to move more? Take a short walk after dinner.
This is called habit stacking, and I love it because we're not trying to reinvent your entire day.
We're using a routine you already have to help create a new one.
10. Protect Your Sleep
Sleep is not the reward you get after you've finished everything else.
Your body needs it.
Sleep affects hunger, energy, recovery, mood, decision-making and how much you feel like moving the next day.
You don't need a perfect bedtime routine. Start with one improvement.
Maybe you go to bed 20 minutes earlier. Put the phone down sooner. Make the room darker. Stop treating sleep as optional.
Small changes count here too.
11. Pay Attention to Your Mindset
Listen to the way you talk to yourself.
Would you talk to someone you love that way?
“I blew it.”
“I have no willpower.”
“I’m terrible at this.”
“I’ll never be able to do it.”
Those thoughts don't move you forward.
Try replacing judgment with curiosity.
What happened? What can I learn from it? What would make this easier next time?
That's coaching yourself instead of criticizing yourself.
12. Create Accountability
Knowing what to do and actually doing it are two very different things.
Accountability helps close that gap.
Maybe that's a friend, a support group, a coach, a tracker or simply checking in with yourself each week.
Accountability isn't about someone policing your choices.
Good accountability helps you stay connected to the commitments you made to yourself.
13. Find YOUR Easiest Way to Health
This may be the most important one.
Your healthy life does not need to look like mine.
Maybe you love the gym. Maybe you hate it.
Maybe meal prepping makes your life easier. Maybe eating the same simple breakfast every morning works better.
Maybe you need structure. Maybe you need flexibility.
There isn't one perfect way to live a healthy life.
The goal is to understand your own needs well enough to create habits you can actually live with.
That's what I mean when I say:
Find your easiest way to health.
The Power of 13 Is About Real Life
Health and wellness should support your life—not become another full-time job.
You don't need to change all 13 things today.
In fact, please don't.
Look through the list and ask yourself:
Which three am I already doing really well?
Then ask:
Which one or two could use a little more attention?
Start there.
That's how sustainable change happens. Not by turning your entire life upside down on Monday morning, but by making intentional choices often enough that they become part of who you are.
And when life happens—and it will—you don't start over.
You come back to your basics.
You keep going.
And you remember that health isn't something you finish.
It's something you live.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is The Power of 13?
The Power of 13 is my common-sense approach to health and wellness. It focuses on the fundamental habits that support a healthy lifestyle without expecting everyone to follow the exact same diet, exercise program or routine.
Do I need to work on all 13 things at once?
Absolutely not. Trying to overhaul everything at once is often exactly what makes healthy living feel overwhelming. Start with what would make the biggest difference—or what feels easiest to improve—and build from there.
What if I already know what I should be doing?
Most of us do. Information usually isn't the missing piece. The challenge is turning what you know into something you consistently do. That's where routines, accountability, support and figuring out what works in your real life become important.
Can virtual coaching really help with accountability?
Yes. My coaching is virtual because support doesn't require sitting in the same room. We can look at what's working, what's getting in your way and what needs to change—while keeping the plan realistic for your life.
What makes Always On Your Side Coaching different?
I don't believe there is one diet, one exercise plan or one formula that works for everyone.
We meet you where you are.
My job isn't to hand you a perfect plan and tell you to follow it. It's to help you understand your habits, make informed choices and build your easiest way to health.
Because the best healthy lifestyle isn't the one that looks perfect on paper.
It's the one you can actually live.
