When Life Feels Heavy: How Do You Make Your Health a Priority?

When Life Feels Heavy: How Do You Make Your Health a Priority?
There are seasons in life when everything just feels HEAVY.
Not necessarily bad. Not all of it, anyway. Just a lot.
A lot of responsibilities. A lot of decisions. A lot of people who need you. A lot of things running through your mind when you're trying to fall asleep at night.
And somewhere in the middle of all of that, you're supposed to find time to take care of yourself.
Sound familiar?
I've been thinking about this a lot lately because, quite frankly, I'm living it.
I'm running a business I love, supporting my amazing husband as we navigate another cancer battle, and wanting to spend as much time as possible with my aging parents.
Thankfully, my parents are doing wonderfully. But I'm also very aware that time is something we don't get back. I don't want to be so busy checking things off my list that I miss opportunities to simply be with them.
And then there's everyday life. The house, the appointments, the errands, the responsibilities, and all those little things that somehow take up so much time.
I'm sure many of you could make a similar list.
Different circumstances, same feeling.
How am I supposed to take care of myself when everything and everyone else needs my attention?
First, I Think We Need to Redefine What Prioritizing Our Health Looks Like.
I've spent years helping people understand that healthy living doesn't have to be complicated.
And I still believe that with every fiber of my being.
But I also know that what taking care of yourself looks like during an easy season of life might be very different from what it looks like during a difficult one.
There are times when you have the energy to plan your meals, exercise regularly, try new recipes, and get everything organized.
And there are times when simply getting through the day feels like an accomplishment.
Both seasons deserve your attention to your health. They just might require different approaches.
Maybe right now you're not preparing beautiful, perfectly balanced dinners every night.
Maybe you're relying on leftovers, frozen vegetables, rotisserie chicken, or something simple you can put together in 10 minutes.
Guess what? You're still taking care of yourself.
Maybe your usual 45-minute workout isn't happening.
But you walked for 15 minutes, stretched before bed, or got outside for some fresh air.
That counts, too.
We have to stop believing that if we can't do everything, we might as well do nothing.
Ask Yourself: What Do I REALLY Need Right Now?
I think this is one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves.
Not what SHOULD I be doing?
Not what is everyone else expecting from me?
But what do I actually need?
Maybe it's sleep.
Maybe it's movement because you've been sitting too much and your body is feeling it.
Maybe it's a quiet morning with a cup of coffee before the day begins.
Maybe it's lunch with your parents, an afternoon with your grandchildren, or simply sitting next to someone you love without feeling like you should be doing something else.
And maybe it's saying NO to something that doesn't need to be on your plate right now.
That's a tough one, isn't it?
Especially when you're used to being the person who gets things done.
But I've been reminding myself lately that just because I CAN do something doesn't mean I HAVE to do it.
Go Back to Your Basics.
When life gets overwhelming, I don't think we need another complicated plan.
We need to get back to the basics.
For me, that means asking a few simple questions:
Am I eating regularly and giving my body the nourishment it needs?
Am I moving my body in some way?
Am I getting enough rest?
Am I drinking my water?
Am I making time for the people and things that bring me joy?
Am I allowing myself to ask for help?
Notice I didn't ask if everything was perfect.
Because perfection isn't the goal.
Consistency, flexibility, and taking care of ourselves in ways that fit our lives are what matter.
And sometimes consistency means doing a little less while continuing to show up for yourself.
Not Everything Deserves the Same Priority.
This one has been especially important for me.
When everything feels urgent, it's easy to treat everything as equally important.
But it isn't.
Some things absolutely need our attention.
Others can wait.
Some things can be delegated.
And some things, if we're being completely truthful, don't need to be done at all.
I'm learning to look at my days a little differently.
Instead of asking, "How am I going to get everything done?"
I'm asking, "What matters most today?"
Because I can always find another task to complete.
There will always be another email, another project, another load of laundry, another item on the list.
But I don't want to become so focused on getting everything done that I forget to enjoy the life I'm working so hard to take care of.
Taking Care of Yourself Isn't Taking Away From Someone Else.
I think this is where many of us struggle.
When someone we love is going through something difficult, our natural instinct is to put their needs first.
And sometimes that's exactly what the situation calls for.
But we can't keep giving from an empty tank.
I want to be present for my husband. I want to enjoy my parents. I want to show up for my clients and continue growing the business I've worked so hard to build.
And I want to feel good while doing those things.
That means my health can't continually be the first thing I cross off the list when life gets busy.
It doesn't mean I need hours of uninterrupted time to myself.
It means recognizing that my health matters, too.
Even when life is messy.
Especially when life is messy.
Give Yourself Permission to Have a Different Kind of Season.
I often remind my clients that healthy living is not an all-or-nothing proposition.
And right now, I'm reminding myself of that same thing.
Some seasons are about growth.
Some are about maintaining.
Some are about simply getting through a difficult stretch without losing sight of yourself.
There is value in all three.
Maybe this isn't the season to take on another big project, chase another goal, or completely overhaul your routine.
Maybe this is the season to simplify.
To protect your energy.
To appreciate the ordinary moments.
To let good enough actually BE good enough.
And to remember that taking care of yourself doesn't have to look impressive to be effective.
Here's What I Want You to Remember.
Life doesn't stop being complicated just because we decide to live healthier.
There will always be unexpected challenges, family responsibilities, stressful days, and situations we can't control.
We can't wait until everything settles down to take care of ourselves.
Because sometimes things don't settle down for a very long time.
Instead, we have to learn how to make our health part of the life we're living RIGHT NOW.
Not the life we wish were a little less busy.
Not the life where everyone is healthy, the calendar is empty, and the to-do list is finished.
This life.
The beautiful, complicated, sometimes exhausting life we have today.
And if all you can manage today is a healthy breakfast, a short walk, a few deep breaths, and an earlier bedtime?
That's a pretty good start.
You don't have to do everything to do something good for yourself.
And perhaps the most important reminder of all?
Your health matters just as much during the difficult seasons as it does during the easy ones.
Be kind to yourself. Make room for what matters. And remember, you don't have to navigate it all perfectly.
One day, one decision, one small choice at a time.
