Take the Stress Out of the Holidays

The holidays are supposed to be joyful — yet for many of us, they feel like a marathon of shopping lists, events, and obligations. We’re often pulled in so many directions that by the time the big day arrives, we’re exhausted and can’t remember the last time we truly enjoyed a quiet moment.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to do it all. Less can truly be more. The holiday season doesn’t need your perfection — it needs your presence.

Start With a Plan — But Make Space to Breathe

Lists are wonderful tools when used wisely. Write down what must be done — gifts, meals, gatherings — and be honest about what can wait. Then add a list just for you: rest, joy, and simple pleasures that fill you up.

When you plan ahead, you make space for peace. And peace is what we’re all craving during this season.

My Favorite Holiday Grounding Rituals

Over the years, I’ve learned that little traditions matter more than perfect decorations or elaborate menus. Here are a few of the ways Don and I keep our holidays grounded and joyful:

  • Mall Date Night: We grab dinner, wander the mall, look at decorations, people-watch, and maybe pick up a few last-minute gifts. It’s our little pocket of calm amid the chaos.

  • A Day Just for Me: I take one full day during the holidays for myself. I grab a coffee and head to a bookstore, flipping through magazines and just enjoying the quiet.

  • Puzzle Time: We always have a puzzle going at home. It’s meditative, relaxing, and brings everyone together without screens or stress.

  • Hot Cocoa & Holiday Lights: We make cocoa, get in the car, and drive around looking at lights. No rush, no plans — just simple joy.

These aren’t extravagant rituals. They’re reminders to slow down and live in the moment.

Essential Oils, Meditation, and Breathwork

If the holidays start to feel heavy, these tools can help you recenter quickly:

  • Essential Oils: Try Frankincense or Lavender for calm, or Citrus oils for a quick mood lift. Diffuse them during dinner prep or before bed.

  • Meditation: Two minutes of stillness can reset your entire day. Just close your eyes, breathe deeply, and repeat: “I am calm. I am present. I am enough.”

  • Breathwork: Try a simple 4-7-8 pattern — inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8. It slows your nervous system and brings instant relief.

Self-care isn’t selfish — it’s what allows you to show up fully for others without losing yourself.

It’s Okay to Relax

You don’t have to make everyone’s holiday perfect. It’s not your responsibility to carry the entire season on your shoulders. Let go of the need to please and instead choose to be present.Give yourself permission to rest, say no when needed, and remember: sometimes less truly is more.

The memories your loved ones will cherish aren’t from flawless meals or spotless houses — they’re from moments when you were relaxed, laughing, and yourself.

The Power of 13 in Action

The Power of 13 reminds us to pause, rest, and breathe.

  • #3 Sleep at least 8 hours a night (non-negotiable)

  • #10 Create boundaries and enforce them

  • #13 Pause and be mindful

These aren’t just habits — they’re survival tools for the modern holiday season.
