That Mysterious Metabolism

"My Metabolism doesn't work"

"I wrecked my metabolism"......."I can't lose weight because my metabolism quit."

Sound Familiar? This coach hears this daily. But when I ask questions like what is metabolism? How do you know it is broken? No one ever has the answer. Metabolism is truly a mystery. I hope today I can break it down and help you understand more about it.

What is Metabolism?

Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. During metabolism, calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function. 2 processes or categories of metabolism:

ANABOLISM: Anabolism is a process of storing of energy, supporting new cells, and maintaining body tissues.

CATABOLISM: Catabolism is breaking down energy to move and to give energy to your body. We need nutrition for metabolism.

Nutrition is necessary for metabolism. This is because metabolism rely on nutrients that they break down in order to produce energy. This energy is what we use even when we are at rest. Energy is used to breathe, circulate, regulate hormones and repair as well as grow cells and so much more.

BMR: Basal Metabolic Rate

This is the number of calories your body uses to carry our basic body processes. The number of calories your body uses at rest.

What affects BMR?

Body Size and Composition: People who have larger muscular builds burn more calories. Even at rest.

Sex: Men burn more calories than women because they have less body fat and are usually larger. Having more muscles means a better working metabolism.

Age: As we get older, we lose muscles, we are less active and this in turn increases our body fat.

You can't break it and it doesn't stop working.

If you are honest with yourself you will find you may think you are as active as you were when you were younger but are you? In general we do not lift as many things as we used too. We are sitting more than we are moving. Muscle is what optimizes your metabolism so this is why you hear you have to continue weight bearing activities throughout your life.

Lack of activity combined with low energy= slow metabolism. Over consumption of calories creates slow metablolism causing your body to store fat.

What is the answer?


It's easy. MOVE muscle. No body building is not required. You don't need to be in the gym 2 hours a day lifting heavy weights. You need to create a routine that will build and sustain muscles.

30 minutes 5 to 7 days a week.



Light weights

Weight training

Swimming/aqua exercise


Stair climbing

Dietary: NOPE hot peppers and green tea are not the answer. While it has been proven that spicy foods speed up metabolism. Myth: Eating spicy foods and drinking green tea will speed up your metabolism. There's a mini-truth to this statement: Research has shown that hot sauce and green tea have a modest effect on your metabolism, but the impact is so insignificant, you'd have to eat large amounts of these foods to even notice a difference.

Eat clean and have good portion control as you are building that muscle.

There is not magic pill

For weight loss or metabolism its work and its hard. But you are not broken....not matter where you are in your health and wellness you can get better. No matter where you are starting.
