It's Not What You Know... It's What You Do
The other day I had one of those honest conversations with myself.
Not the kind where I make excuses.
Not the kind where I tell myself I'm "too busy."
A real conversation.
I grabbed a notebook and made two columns.
What I Know and What I Actually Do.
It was eye-opening.
I've been coaching health and wellness for more than 25 years. I've maintained a 65-pound weight loss for over two decades. I've written a book. I teach these principles every single week.
I know a lot.
But that doesn't automatically mean I'm doing everything I know I should be doing.
That list forced me to stop hiding behind knowledge and start looking at my actions.
Because here's the truth...
Knowledge doesn't create results. Action does.
We Live in the Information Age
Today we have more health information than ever before.
Thousands of podcasts.
Millions of YouTube videos.
Books.
Blogs.
Social media.
AI.
Nutrition apps.
Workout plans.
You could spend every day learning something new about health and still never become healthier.
Why?
Because learning isn't the finish line.
It's the starting line.
My List
As I looked at my own two columns, I noticed something.
There wasn't anything revolutionary missing.
No magic supplement.
No trendy diet.
No secret workout.
Instead, it was the little things.
I could walk just a little farther.
I could pick up the pace a little more often.
I could become stronger.
I could simplify my meals again.
I could get back to basic nutrition instead of overthinking healthy eating.
Nothing dramatic.
Just better.
Sometimes we don't need a complete makeover.
We simply need a small adjustment.
I Hired a Personal Trainer
One thing stood out immediately.
Strength training.
I know it's important.
I teach that it's important.
Research consistently shows that strength training helps preserve muscle, improve bone density, increase metabolism, enhance balance, and support healthy aging.
But here's the honest part...
I don't know enough about lifting weights the right way to get the most benefit.
So instead of pretending I had all the answers, I hired someone who does.
That wasn't admitting weakness.
It was investing in my future.
Sometimes the smartest thing you can say is...
"I don't know enough."
And then find someone who does.
There is strength in asking for help.
I Went Back to the Basics
Funny how often we complicate healthy living.
We chase recipes with twenty ingredients.
Fancy meal plans.
Expensive supplements.
Complicated tracking systems.
Meanwhile...
A grilled chicken breast.
A pile of vegetables.
A healthy fat.
Some fruit.
Water.
Those basics have worked for decades.
Healthy eating doesn't have to be exciting every single meal.
Sometimes simple wins.
Actually...
Simple usually wins.
Here's the Hard Question
What do you know...
...that you aren't doing?
Take a minute.
Write it down.
Not what your spouse should do.
Not what your kids should do.
Not what your doctor told you.
You.
What do you already know would improve your health if you simply started doing it consistently?
You probably don't need another article.
You probably don't need another diet.
You probably don't need another gadget.
You need one action.
My Challenge to You
Draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper.
On one side write:
What I Know
On the other side write:
What I Do
Be brutally honest.
Don't judge yourself.
Don't shame yourself.
Just notice the gaps.
Then choose one.
Not ten.
One.
Walk five more minutes.
Drink one more glass of water.
Go to bed thirty minutes earlier.
Cook one healthy meal.
Stretch for ten minutes.
Schedule the doctor's appointment.
Hire the trainer.
Ask for help.
Small actions repeated over time always outperform big intentions that never happen.
The Bottom Line
I've learned something over the years.
Success isn't built on what we know.
It's built on what we repeatedly do.
Knowledge fills your mind.
Action changes your life.
So today, instead of asking yourself...
"What else do I need to learn?"
Try asking...
"What do I already know that I'm finally ready to do?"
That one question might change everything.
Because at the end of the day...
It's not what you know.
It's what you do.
