Make Your Bed: The Art of Starting Your Day Successfully

How doing one small thing can set you up for success

Make your bed.

That's it.

That's my groundbreaking health and wellness advice for today. 😂

Okay, maybe there's a little more to it than that.

When we talk about improving our health, we tend to go BIG.

We're going to start exercising five days a week.

We're going to meal prep every Sunday.

We're going to drink all the water, eat all the protein, get eight hours of sleep, stretch every morning, meditate, journal and somehow still have time to live our actual lives.

And then we wonder why we feel overwhelmed before we even get started.

What if instead, we started with one thing?

Something small.

Something simple.

Something we can accomplish before the day has a chance to get complicated.

Make your bed.

WHY DOES SOMETHING SO SMALL MATTER?

Making your bed probably isn't going to burn many calories.

It isn't going to increase your protein.

Your Oura Ring isn't going to congratulate you.

But it does something else.

It gives you a win.

Before you've answered an email, gone to work, taken care of someone else, made breakfast or figured out everything that needs your attention today, you've already completed something.

And there's something powerful about starting the day with DONE.

Not I need to.

Not I should.

Not I'll get to it later.

Done.

It creates a little bit of order.

A little accomplishment.

A little momentum.

And sometimes that tiny bit of momentum is exactly what we need.

ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER

This is where making your bed becomes a health and wellness conversation.

Because healthy living isn't usually about one gigantic decision.

It's hundreds of little decisions made over and over again.

You make your bed.

Then you fill your water bottle.

You eat a breakfast with some protein.

You take your vitamins.

You put on your walking shoes.

You take the walk.

You make a decent choice for lunch.

One choice didn't magically create the next one.

But you've started moving in the direction you wanted to go.

Success creates momentum.

And momentum makes the next choice feel a little easier.

That's how habits are built.

Not usually with some dramatic Monday morning overhaul.

But with one small action followed by another.

YOUR FIRST WIN DOESN'T HAVE TO BE MAKING YOUR BED

Now, if you're reading this thinking:

"Paris, I don't care if my bed is made."

Fair enough. 😂

This isn't really about the bed.

It's about finding your first win of the day.

Maybe yours is:

Drinking a glass of water before coffee.

Eating breakfast instead of skipping it.

Taking your medication or vitamins.

Stretching for five minutes.

Writing in your journal.

Taking the dog around the block.

Packing your lunch.

Putting dinner ingredients in the crockpot.

Taking five quiet minutes before everyone else needs you.

The actual task isn't nearly as important as what it represents:

I showed up for myself today.

WHEN EVERYTHING FEELS LIKE TOO MUCH

I see this in coaching all the time.

We look at everything we want to change and suddenly it becomes one enormous project.

Lose the weight.

Get stronger.

Eat better.

Exercise more.

Sleep better.

Drink less.

Reduce stress.

Get organized.

Take better care of ourselves.

Whew.

No wonder we don't know where to start.

So sometimes my question is simply:

What's one thing you can do right now?

Not the 12 things you should do this week.

Not everything you wish you had done yesterday.

One thing. Right now.

Do that.

Then decide what's next.

There is tremendous power in proving to yourself that you can follow through—even on something small.

THIS IS THE POWER OF 13 IN REAL LIFE

This is exactly why I believe so strongly in my Power of 13.

Living a healthy lifestyle isn't about doing 13 things perfectly every single day.

It's about having basics you can come back to.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Some days you're going to knock it out of the park.

Other days, making the bed and drinking your water may feel like a pretty darn good accomplishment.

Both count.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is to keep showing up.

AND IF THE MORNING GOES SIDEWAYS?

Here's the other important part.

Maybe you didn't make the bed.

Maybe breakfast was a disaster.

Maybe you missed your workout.

Maybe your morning started with chaos before your feet even hit the floor.

That does not mean the day is ruined.

I don't believe we only get one chance each morning to have a successful day.

You can restart at 10:00 AM.

You can restart after lunch.

You can restart at 4:30 in the afternoon.

You can even make one good decision at 8:00 at night that makes tomorrow easier.

There is always another opportunity to make the next choice.

That matters in health and wellness because the "Well, I already blew it" mentality can do far more damage than one missed workout or one less-than-great meal ever could.

Don't throw away the rest of the day because one part didn't go as planned.

Just find your next one thing.

MAKE YOUR BED

So tomorrow morning, make your bed.

And no, I'm not suggesting hospital corners, decorative pillows arranged by height or turning your bedroom into a Pottery Barn catalog.

Just pull up the covers. 😂

Then take a second and recognize:

I already accomplished something today.

Now what's next?

Drink the water.

Eat the protein.

Take the walk.

Pack the lunch.

Make the appointment.

Stretch for five minutes.

Step outside.

Take a breath.

Whatever your one thing is, do it.

Then see what happens next.

Because you don't have to conquer the day before breakfast.

You just have to start it.

And sometimes, success really can begin with something as simple as making your bed.
