THE POWER OF PAUSING

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is absolutely nothing. For a minute, anyway!

When was the last time you simply paused?

Not because your phone died, your internet went down or you were waiting for the microwave to finish.

I mean intentionally PAUSED.

Stopped what you were doing. Took a breath. Checked in with yourself. Maybe even asked yourself what you actually needed at that moment.

We live in a world that encourages us to keep going. There is always something that needs to be done, somewhere we need to be, someone who needs something from us or another item waiting on that never-ending to-do list.

And somewhere along the way, we've convinced ourselves that pausing means we're falling behind.

What if pausing is actually one of the most productive things we can do for our health and wellness?

I've been thinking about this in my own life and in conversations with my coaching clients. So many of us are really good at showing up for everyone and everything else.

But how often do we pause long enough to show up for ourselves?

PAUSE BEFORE YOU REACT

Let's start with something we all do.

React.

Someone says something that rubs us the wrong way. An unexpected problem interrupts our day. A family member pushes that ONE button they know exactly how to push.

And before we know it, we've said something, done something or made a decision based entirely on how we felt in that moment.

Sound familiar?

Here's where a pause can change everything.

Before you respond, give yourself a moment to ask:

  • Is this worth my energy?

  • Am I responding to what's happening right now, or am I reacting to something from my past?

  • Will my response make this situation better?

  • Do I even need to respond?

Sometimes the answer is to speak up. Sometimes it's to walk away. And sometimes it's to recognize that not everything requires an immediate response.

A pause gives us the opportunity to RESPOND instead of REACT.

And that little bit of space can save us an awful lot of unnecessary stress.

PAUSE BEFORE YOU EAT

Now let's bring this into the kitchen!

How many times have you walked into the kitchen, opened the refrigerator and stood there looking for something?

You're not necessarily hungry. You're just looking.

Maybe you're bored. Maybe you're frustrated. Maybe you're tired. Maybe you've had a lousy day and that bag of chips is calling your name.

Before you grab something, PAUSE.

Ask yourself:

Am I physically hungry, or am I trying to satisfy something else?

If you're hungry, EAT! Your body needs nourishment.

But if you're stressed, lonely, bored or overwhelmed, food may not be what you actually need.

Perhaps you need a walk, a conversation, a few minutes of quiet or simply a change of scenery.

This is also where portion control comes into play.

Before you go back for seconds, pause and give your body a chance to tell you whether you're satisfied.

And remember, we're not trying to make food complicated. We're simply trying to become more aware of WHY we're eating and HOW MUCH we actually need.

A pause is not a food restriction. It's an opportunity to make a conscious choice.

PAUSE AND CHALLENGE THOSE OLD FEELINGS AND HABITS

Just because you've always done something a certain way doesn't mean you have to keep doing it.

This may be one of the most powerful reasons to pause.

We all have old habits, old beliefs and old feelings that have been hanging around for years.

Sometimes they show up without an invitation!

Maybe you've always believed that missing one workout means you've failed.

Maybe you've spent years feeling guilty about taking time for yourself.

Maybe your automatic response to a stressful day is to reach for food.

Or perhaps you've convinced yourself that if you can't do something perfectly, there's no point in doing it at all.

PAUSE.

Where did that belief come from? Is it even true? And most importantly, is it helping you become the person you want to be?

Here's a little coaching exercise.

The next time you catch yourself falling into an old habit, stop and ask:

Is this who I am today, or is this simply what I've always done?

You are allowed to change your mind. You're allowed to establish new routines. You're allowed to outgrow habits that no longer serve you.

And you certainly don't have to keep punishing yourself for decisions you made years ago.

Sometimes a pause is all it takes to recognize that you're about to repeat a behavior you've been working so hard to change.

PAUSE WHEN LIFE GETS OVERWHELMING

Have you ever had one of those days when everything feels urgent?

The emails are piling up. The house needs attention. Work is demanding. Someone needs a favor. You haven't exercised, dinner isn't planned and you have approximately 47 things running through your head.

And what do we do?

We try to do MORE.

We work harder, move faster and somehow convince ourselves that if we can just get everything done, we'll finally be able to relax.

Except there's always something else.

This is where I want you to give yourself permission to pause.

Take five minutes. Step outside. Breathe. Make a cup of tea. Sit somewhere quiet.

Then ask yourself:

What actually needs my attention RIGHT NOW?

Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not everything on your to-do list.

Right now.

You may discover that some things can wait. Some things can be delegated. And some things really don't need to be done at all.

Remember, being busy and being productive are not necessarily the same thing.

And neither one determines your worth.

PAUSE WITHOUT THE GUILT

This one is particularly important.

Why do so many of us feel guilty when we're not doing something?

We sit down to read a book and immediately start thinking about the laundry.

We take an afternoon off and mentally list everything we SHOULD be accomplishing.

We skip a workout because we're exhausted and then spend the rest of the day beating ourselves up about it.

Enough already!

Rest is part of a healthy lifestyle.

Your body needs time to recover. Your mind needs time to recharge. And you need opportunities to enjoy your life without constantly measuring your productivity.

Taking a break doesn't mean you're lazy.

It doesn't mean you've lost your motivation.

And it certainly doesn't mean you've given up on your goals.

A PAUSE IS NOT QUITTING.

Sometimes it's exactly what allows you to KEEP SHOWING UP.

PAUSE TO APPRECIATE WHAT'S RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU

Here's something else I've been thinking about.

We spend so much time planning for what's next that we sometimes forget to enjoy what's happening right now.

We're thinking about tomorrow's appointments during today's walk.

We're planning dinner while we're eating lunch.

We're checking our phones when we're sitting with people we love.

And we're so focused on the next goal that we forget to appreciate how far we've already come.

What if we made a conscious effort to pause and enjoy the little things?

The first sip of coffee in the morning.

A beautiful Colorado sunset.

A conversation with someone we love.

A walk when the weather is absolutely perfect.

Or simply the satisfaction of realizing that today, despite everything else going on, we took care of ourselves.

These moments matter.

And we don't have to earn the right to enjoy them.

PAUSE TO REEVALUATE YOUR GOALS

Sometimes we get so committed to a particular plan that we forget to ask whether it's still working for us.

Maybe the exercise routine you established six months ago no longer fits your schedule.

Maybe your nutritional needs have changed.

Maybe your priorities have shifted because life looks a little different than it did when you originally set your goals.

That's okay!

Pause and evaluate.

Are your goals still realistic? Are your routines supporting your health? Are you spending your time and energy on things that actually matter to you?

This is one of the reasons I love revisiting our Power of 13.

It's not about doing everything perfectly. It's about identifying the common-sense habits that support YOUR individual needs and finding ways to make them work in YOUR life.

Sometimes we need to adjust our approach.

And sometimes we need to recognize that what worked for us five years ago may not be what we need today.

The goal is to continue moving forward, even if the path looks a little different.

PUT THE POWER OF PAUSING INTO PRACTICE

Your 7-day pausing challenge

This week, I want you to practice taking intentional pauses. Nothing complicated. Nothing that requires another app, expensive equipment or a brand-new planner!

Check in with your hunger and ask what your body needs.

Day 2

Pause before reacting

Give yourself a moment before responding to something frustrating.

Day 4

Pause without guilt

Take 15 minutes to rest or do something you enjoy.

Day 5

MY FINAL THOUGHT

Life isn't going to stop throwing challenges our way.

There will always be responsibilities, unexpected changes, stressful moments and things that don't go according to plan.

But we do have a choice in how we respond.

We can continue rushing through our days, reacting out of habit and putting ourselves at the bottom of the priority list.

Or we can learn to PAUSE.

To listen to our bodies. To question our old beliefs. To recognize when we need rest. To appreciate what we have. And to make decisions that support the life we're working so hard to create.

You don't have to accomplish everything today.

You don't have to have all the answers.

And you certainly don't have to be perfect.

Sometimes the most powerful way to keep showing up is to give yourself permission to PAUSE.
